The Effect of Jeepney Phaseout for the Filipino Passengers and Drivers

The wheel and steering wheel is the hope that brings us the dreams we desire. The jeepney phaseout is a strong hero that is hard to fight with its strength, a policy last year until now to stop the operation of old jeepneys on the roads to replace them with more modern. In this way it will help us to breathe more fresh air. The jeep is a part or we are used to in our culture every year that passes the jeep is still the one we ride and stay of part our culture.

The Jeepney Phaseout is not just a law made or implemented. This may affect drivers who have been driving jeeps for a long time so that we can get to where we are going, they may have a complaint because of this law about jeeps and most drivers do not agree to continue the Jeepney Phaseout and replace with a more modern one. The drivers have a big problem with fuel here, their daily income is used up and they will lose their jobs and those who have already owned a jeep and their finances may be affected and they have to buy a new vehicle to be able to drive, this is without answer enough if the government donates new proper vehicle to jeeney drivers. Some of the passengers also do not agree with this law, it may affect their daily journey such as going to work, school. Another effect of this is the increase in fares even if there is a discount for others, it is still high and also the fare is gradually increasing every month and other commuters endure the cheap public transport to save even if they feel the heat because it is crowded and full, smelling bad smells like smoke and so on and see different people, hear different noises.

“Actually, there is no phaseout. We are trying to modernize, but we are not phasing out the units. Those old vehicles or jeepneys that are no longer permissible due to their age and no longer suitable because they are smoky and deteriorated will be replaced with new units,” (Rutaquio, 2024)

In life, change is like moving from an old jeep tire to a new steering wheel of hope. However, replacing old jeepneys with modern vehicles is not just a simple step. This is a battle against the culture and livelihood of many Filipinos. The Jeepney Phaseout is not just a law, it is a change that will have different effects on drivers and passengers. Despite these challenges, it is still important to promote modernization for better and safer transportation, although there are steps to be taken to help those affected by the change. In the end, accepting change is like riding the jeep of life with rules to follow, challenges to face, but in the end, it is towards a more comfortable and brigher future.
